drop kerb installations

Frequently asked questions about drop kerb installations

What is the law on dropped Kerbs?

Highways Act 1980, Section 184 makes it an offence to drive a vehicle over a footway or verge where there is no vehicle crossing. They can be used to permit vehicles to cross the public footway.

Do I need planning permission for a dropped KERB?

Five kerb sections will be required to make a driveway average. Your local Council will be your highway authority. This assumes that the Council has the road and footpath. The Council might decide not to grant permission, either as a roads authority or planning authority, or both. Planning permission is required if the road that runs outside your property is a trunk, principal, or classified road (classes A, B, or C).

What is a drop kerb

A dropped kerb is a sloped area that the vehicle crosses between the road and the property’s front. It’s often a driveway that has a droppedkerb.

Can I park on my own dropped KERB?

Parking a vehicle fully or partially across a dropped kerb is classed as an obstruction and either the police or local council can enforce the contravention. It doesn’t matter how absurd, you can be issued an NPCN for parking your vehicle across your dropped kerb.

Is parking over a dropped KERB illegal?

Parking across a dropped kerb is a parking contravention for which a Penalty Charge Notice can be issued. If you park across a dropped curb, you will be charged with an offence unless you have permission.

Does a dropped KERB add value?

A spot for a car can add value to your property. However, the exact amount depends on where you live. You will need to apply to get a dropped curb outside your property.

Can you have a dropped KERB on a corner?

At least 10 metres must be between the location of the vehicular access and the entrance to any junction or sharp corner. The vehicle must not be parked within 10 metres of any road or pavement.

Can you drop the KERB outside your house?

Planning permission is usually required if you wish to drop the kerb outside your property to allow a car to cross the pavement. This is because pavement may need to have additional strength to handle the vehicle’s weight, as well as protect any pipes or cables underneath.

Can you have a driveway without a dropped KERB?

A dropped kerb is necessary if you want to drive a vehicle from your driveway onto the footway. You cannot drive on the footway if you don’t have a dropped curb. You are violating the law and could face enforcement action.
